Many companies over the years have used a magnetic tape system for backing up.  These magnetic tape systems are not as reliable as first thought.  Even when the information was backed up successfully, the tapes could still be subject to being damaged, corrupted or lost, making retrieval of important documents almost impossible.

With the more recent use of hard disks, retrieval of backed-up documents became more reliable  However, like the magnetic tapes, these hard disks could still become lost or damaged making data retrieval impossible.
